Anthony Hawkshaw

Anthony Hawkshaw

President and Chief Executive Officer, Director

Tony Hawkshaw has over 30 years’ global experience in the mining sector. He was a founding shareholder, director and CFO of Rio Alto Mining from 2007 to 2014. Tony was a key contributor to the vision, strategy and growth of Rio Alto, which under his tenure grew from a TSXV-listed exploration company to a TSX- and NYSE-listed intermediate gold producer on the basis of its acquisition, development and successful execution of the La Arena project and subsequent acquisition and development of the Shahuindo deposit, both of which are located in Peru. Rio Alto Mining was acquired for these outstanding assets by Tahoe Resources Inc. in 2015 in a deal worth US $1.12 billion. Prior to Rio Alto, Tony held senior executive positions at numerous resource firms including Pan American Silver, Chariot Resources and Grove Energy. In addition to his track record of successfully executing the transformation of a mineral exploration company into a mid-tier producer, Tony has arranged numerous debt, equity and convertible debt financings with institutional investors, commercial banks and multilateral lending agencies, and has experience in the concentrate off-take and metals trading markets. 


Andrew T. Swarthout

Executive Chairman

Andrew Swarthout is a recognized leader and mineral explorer with an extensive history of ore deposit discoveries and project acquisitions in the Americas. With a vast breadth and depth of experience in mineral exploration in Peru, Andrew has taken an active role in promoting environmental stewardship, good governance and foreign investment in the country’s mineral industry.

Prior to founding Bear Creek Mining in 2000, Andrew was Vice-President of Exploration for Southern Peru Copper during which time he was responsible for the discovery of the Shahuindo and Los Chancas deposits and significant reserve expansions on the company’s two porphyry copper deposits as well as initiation of the acquisition of the Tia Maria copper deposit. Prior to this, he was the exploration manager (Mexico) for Kennecott Minerals (now RTZ) where he contributed to the discovery and expansion of a number of precious metal deposits.

Andrew has helped raise over USD $250 million in equity financing for Bear Creek. Under his management, the Company has discovered two world-class silver deposits with combined reserves in excess of 450 million ounces, making Bear Creek Mining a leading emerging silver producer.


Catherine McLeod-Seltzer

Catherine McLeod-Seltzer is a leader in the minerals industry, recognized for her financial expertise, access to capital and ability to create growth-focused companies that generate significant shareholder value. Catherine has helped raise over $600 million in working capital for mining exploration in the past 20 years and been directly involved in more than $4 billion in corporate transactions. She has founded, stewarded and directed numerous successful mining ventures in addition to Bear Creek Mining, including Arequipa Resources, Francisco Gold, Miramar Mining, Stornoway Diamonds, Peru Copper and Lucara Diamond.  She attributes the success of these companies in large part to her partnership with outstanding geological and corporate teams, a pattern repeated at Bear Creek.

Catherine was named “Mining Man of the Year” by The Northern Miner in 1999; given the “Award for Performance” by the Association of Women in Finance in 1997; positioned on the Financial Post’s “Power 50”; has received the “Canada’s Most Powerful Women Top 100 Award” and was named one of “100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining” in 2013 by Women In Mining (UK). In addition to her position as Chairman of Bear Creek Mining, Catherine is a director of Kinross Gold Corporation, Grenville Strategic Royalties and Major Drilling Group.


David De Witt

Lead Director

Mr. De Witt is a founder and the Chairman of Pathway Capital Ltd., a Vancouver-based private venture capital company and has extensive experience in the areas of corporate and securities law, as well as mergers and acquisitions. He graduated with a BComm/LLB from the University of British Columbia and practiced corporate, securities and mining law until his retirement from the practice of law in January 1997. David currently holds directorships in a number of public companies involved in the natural resource field and has experience in resource projects located in Latin America, North America and Asia.


Kevin R. Morano

Mr. Morano is the Managing Principal and founder of KEM Capital LLC, a private equity and management advisory firm that invests in and advises emerging and startup companies in the mining, medical and other industries. His global financial executive expertise is a valuable asset to Bear Creek, as is extensive experience in the mining industry.

Kevin enjoyed a highly successful 21-year career at ASARCO Incorporated, a global copper mining company and specialty chemicals and aggregates producer that was acquired by Grupo Mexico in December 1999. At ASARCO, he served in various senior executive capacities including Chief Financial Officer, Executive Vice President and ultimately President and Chief Operating Officer. His major accomplishments included managing the completion of an $800-million (U.S.) financing program for a Peruvian subsidiary and completing the public listing of Southern Peru Copper Corporation on the New York Stock Exchange. Following his tenure at ASARCO, Kevin was the Chief Financial Officer and subsequently Senior Vice President for Marketing and Business Development at Lumenis Ltd., a laser and light-based technology company specializing in medical devices for aesthetic, surgical and ophthalmic applications.

Kevin holds a B.Sc. in Finance from Drexel University and an M.B.A. from Rider University. He also serves as a director of Golden Minerals Company.


Frank R. Tweddle

Mr. Tweddle is the Principal of Andes Mining Research SAC (AMR) a Peruvian firm that identifies and recommends investment opportunities in the mining sector to mining companies, private equity funds and trading companies.

Prior to AMR, Frank was Deputy CEO of Mitsui del Peru S.A., in charge of new business development in the areas of natural resources, energy and infrastructure in Peru. He previously held executive positions with Southern Peru Copper Corporation (“SPCC”) where he managed commercial conditions and price risk for metals and concentrates, and with Standard Bank Plc. where he originated transactions in structured project and trade finance.

During his tenure at SPCC as Vice President - Commercial, Frank was a member of the executive committee responsible for providing strategic direction over the business activities of the corporation including, mine and infrastructure expansion plans, review of exploration activities, government, labor & community relations, human resources and logistics.


Erfan Kazemi

Erfan Kazemi is the Chief Financial Officer of Sandstorm Gold Ltd. Since 2011, he has helped raise half a billion dollars in debt and equity capital for Sandstorm and has deployed more than $600 million in over 30 transactions. Previously, Mr. Kazemi was a Senior Manager with PricewaterhouseCoopers where he managed the audits of billion-dollar multinational entities and assisted clients in areas such as public financings, mergers and acquisitions, US/SEC securities filings, and various other areas. Mr. Kazemi is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CA), a Chartered Financial Analyst charter holder and is a graduate of the University of British Columbia where he received a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics). In the community, Erfan serves as a member of the board of directors of the Vancouver Public Library (VPL) Foundation, was previously the Vice-Chair of the VPL, and is a former member of the University of British Columbia Board of Governors. He has won numerous awards for his professional and charitable achievements including CFO of the Year by Business in Vancouver and Vancouver’s Top 40 under 40 Award.


Stephen Lang

Stephen Lang is the current Chairman and former President and CEO of Centerra Gold Inc. He has over 40 years’ experience in the mineral sector including engineering, development and production in gold, coal, platinum group metals and copper operations. Stephen has held senior executive positions at a number of global mining companies including Barrick Gold, Stillwater Mining, Kinross Gold, Rio Algom and Santa Fe Pacific Gold, and is currently a Director of Alio Gold Inc. and International Tower Hill Mines Ltd. Mr. Lang earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla and a Masters degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla.

Mr. Antunez de Mayolo has over 30 years’ experience in the Peruvian mining industry in all areas of mine development including community relations, environmental permitting, mine planning, concentrator optimization, hydrogeology/water resources, reserve expansion, and exploration. Prior to joining Bear Creek in 2010, Mr. Antunez de Mayolo was the Director of Operations for Southern Copper Corporation’s Cuajone mine and concentrator complex, one of the largest mines in Peru, after having served as the Cuajone Mine Manager, Manager of Technical Services and Superintendent of Geology.


Paul Tweddle

Chief Financial Officer

Paul Tweddle has extensive knowledge and experience from various sectors of the mining and metals industry. He meaningfully contributed to the growth of Rio Alto Mining as its VP of Finance and Commercial from the La Arena mine construction stage through 2015, where he also played a key role in the Shahuindo mine acquisition and financing. Prior to working in the mining sector, Paul was the Global Macro Strategist at Dunheath Capital, a macro hedge fund specializing in commodities with a metals focus. He has also worked as a physical base and precious metals trader, a risk manager at a copper semi manufacturer, and a trader of futures and options on both precious and base metals. Most recently he served as CFO for Oben Holding Group, a leading global flexible packaging manufacturer with operations in six countries, US $350M in annual sales, and 1800 employees.  Mr. Tweddle holds an MBA from the Yale School of Management and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Washington, with a major in Accounting and Finance.

Vice President, Corporate Development (Peruvian Subsidiaries)

Mr. Franco is responsible for Bear Creek’s Social and Environmental programs and community relationships. He is a Graduate of Administration with an educational emphasis on economics, biology, chemistry and medicine, and for more than twenty years has applied his knowledge and skills to a wide variety of industries including civil construction, fisheries and ports, energy and foreign trade.  Mr. Franco is a creative problem-solver who is consistently able to find innovative strategies and solutions to solve direct real-world issues and build respectful social relationships. His model of Environment and Social governance for the Corani project, which emphasizes sustainable, culturally-appropriate, and locally-driven community growth and development, is highly successful and has been cited repeatedly by high-ranking government officials as a template for responsible mine development.


Alvaro Diaz

Vice President, Legal (Peruvian subsidiaries)

Alvaro Díaz Castro holds a Master’s degree in Business Law and has more than twenty years of experience as corporate counsel in the Peruvian mining sector. Mr. Diaz has held senior legal positions in companies such as Southern Peru Copper (ex-Asarco and now Grupo México), and Cerro Verde (Freeport Mc Moran) and has significant experience in contractual, environmental, social and tax issues as they apply to mining companies. Mr. Diaz applies his legal skills and expertise to Bear Creek’s regulatory, permitting and environmental activities related to its Peruvian projects.


Eric Caba

Vice President, Project Development

Eric Caba has over 25 years’ experience in the mining industry across the Americas and Europe.  Most recently he served as the Vice President, South America Business Unit for Hudbay Minerals Inc. where he was intimately involved in development of the business unit and the construction of the Constancia mine in Peru.  Starting as Operational Readiness Manager before moving to Director of Operations and then Vice President, Eric played a key role in the design and development of the business processes and operational preparations, focusing on business relationships, productivity, efficiency and cost control, and coordinated implementation of these processes and preparations through all levels and stages of the Constancia mine construction. Prior to his tenure at Hudbay in Peru, Eric held operations management positions at a variety of global base metal, precious metal and industrial mineral operations. Eric holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Idaho.
